Sweet Football Gods

One of the more unimaginative defensive schemes of the past season gets you fired.

Top candidates to replace Sanders:

  1. Winston Moss- Current Assistant Head Coach of Packers
  2. Sean McDermott- Defensive Backs Coach- Philadelphia Eagles
  3. Mike Nolan- Recent 49ers Head Coach-Previous Defensive Coordinator experience
  4. Sal Sunseri- Defensive Line Coach- Carolina Panthers
  5. Jim Washburn- Defensive Line Coach- Tennessee Titans
Here’s to a new coordinator who believes in creating pressure and not hope and pray for the defensive line to carry the day play after play when the horses aren’t there.

The Detroit Lions Explained

It’s simple, it’s the Curse of Bobby Lane.

In 1958, after leading the Lions to 3 NFL Championships and providing Detroit nearly decade of Hall of Fame play, the Lions traded Bobby Layne. Bobby was injured during the last championship season and the Lions thought he was through and wanted to get what they could for him. According to Legend, as he was leaving for Pittsburgh Bobby said that Detroit “would not win for 50 years”.

This makes sense for a team who in their most recent past hired a guy who was just a color commentator and had no previous front office experience.

And here’s to them keeping things all mucked up in Delta City.

Worst Team EVER

It’s not an opinion, the Detroit Lions are indeed the worst team ever going 0-16.

That’s not the type of history a team wants to make and it’s the epitome of what’s happening in Detroit overall.

No wonder the Big Three are in trouble

So your team is 0-15 and just got shellacked 42-7.  Maybe you would think after the futility you’ve put the fans through under Matt Millen, maybe cleaning everyone out would be a good idea.

Well no, not if you’re William Clay Ford. You keep on trucking with the same thing that brung ya here.

Detroit Lions owner William Clay Ford said Sunday he will hire another person to upgrade the team’s football operations, but it might not be a general manager with total control over all personnel decisions.

“It depends. I don’t know about the odds (of hiring a GM with total authority),” Ford said. “Let’s see who’s available and what experience they have and see if they fit in any of our slots.”

Ford said regardless of whom he hires, he wants both Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand to play significant roles in the front office, possibly in the positions they currently hold.

So the two people who’ve been instrumental in prolonging the losing season will stay on and have a significant role next year.

Talk about sticking with a failed business model for too long.

How an arugula chomper relates to bitter clingers

What’s the easiest way to get the regular “folk” to relate to you in this country? Why, talk about football of course.

Hey, he’s the Messiah, he can do what he wants apparently:

“This is important,” Mr. Obama said. “I’m gonna throw my weight around a little bit. I think it’s the right thing to do.”

“I think any sensible person would say that if you’ve got a bunch of teams who play throughout the season and many of them have one loss or two losses [and] there’s no clear decisive winner, that we should be creating a playoff system,” Mr. Obama said.

Yeah, to a certain extent I can see his point that most college football fans would love to see a football version of March Madness, but I just have one small quibble with you Mr. President-Elect…you’re going to be the damn President of the United States!!

One would think there’s other pressing matters for an incoming President in these times.

Message to CBS and the NFL

Hey, not everyone in Wisconsin needs to watch every New York Jets game.

Seriously, the Cult of Favre doesn’t extend to everyone here. A lot of us have moved on. We’ve accepted the man didn’t want to be here because he couldn’t get his way. We’ve accepted that he’s turned out to be an vindictive little turd.

By my count, I’ve seen at least 4 NY Jets games this season. In the past 10 years, that’s probably as many as I’ve ever seen on tv. Enough CBS and ENOUGH NFL.

Let me get this straight…

Your team is 0-8 and during a game after you scored a touchdown, you were going to unfurl an “Obama” banner in the endzone?

And is it any wonder why the Cincinnati Bengals are a complete laughingstock in the NFL?

How Misdirection Works

So you’re a potential Hall of Fame quarterback. You’re still holding onto anger that your old team decided to move on without you after you pulled their chain one too many times.

So they trade you away to the New York Jets. You’re still angry because you still wanted to be in Green Bay. So what’s a spiteful way to get back at them? Well you call up a division rival and share some offensive tendencies.

So how do you deflect from this? Well of course, just say the Lions lost anyway (big time), so what’s the deal? And therein lies the problem. It’s not the info you share…it’s that you even thought to do it.

Sounds like a certain plumber we hear about these days. Ignore the socialist wet dream answer, you tear down the person who just asked a question by inpugning him, calling him a liar, making light he doesn’t have a license, digging into his financial history, mocking him on tv and basically try to destroy him.

All to misdirect people from the answer given to his question.

Interestingly enough, the incestuous ESPN is not covering the story. Not a single blurb on ESPN.com or on the air.

As for #4, your relationship with this state and your former team, the one that gave you second chance after you basically drunk your way off the Atlanta Falcons, is done with. Hope you and your Mississippi clan enjoy playing in New York when things may go bad.

Nice knowing ya.

More ESPN hijinx

Fine ESPN, you have Dallas and Pittburgh #1 & #2. But..you have Minniesoda at #7 and Green Bay at #14…!?

So un-realistic I can’t even begin to fathom it’s jump-sharked-ness. Super Bowls SHOULD count more than “crushing playoff wins” or a stupid Monday Night Football ranking. It IS the prize they fight for during the season.

Number seven…give me a break ESPN.

Why is ESPN so awful?

I know, I’m a guy and I’m supposed to have this mythical infatuation with Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, but when it comes to their Sunday morning TWO HOUR football preview show, it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Lots of people may like Chris Berman and his antics, but they’re so over-played he takes away from the moments that make football great to shine the light on him.

Then there’s the jock aristocracy, which is a staple of ESPN. Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson, Keyshawn Johnson, Chris Carter, Steve Young, Emmitt Smith…it goes on and on. Not that there’s anything wrong with former athletes having jobs after their playing days are over, it’s just the constant “When I played, this is how I did things” meme they use to discuss the game today. Not all great athletes make great coaches, nor do they all make great commentators.

This is probably how most ESPN commentators get their start I reckon:

Not to take away anything from what ESPN shows on a daily basis, but I think biggest problem with them is their love-affair with jock-dom. Personally, I prefer the team and the sport above all else. I don’t fall in love with individual players, because usually they would rather use my enthusiasm for the team (buying tickets and garb) as way to get a bigger contract somewhere else.

Then again, I’m thankful I’m no Oakland Raider fan.
